Rinku Singh’s Exclusion from India’s 2024 T20 World Cup Squad Raises Eyebrows

The omission of Rinku Singh from India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad has sparked discussions and surprise among cricket enthusiasts. Despite his impressive performances in T20 internationals, Singh found himself on the reserved players’ list rather than in the primary squad. This decision has prompted former cricketer Danish Kaneria to voice his opinion, advocating for Singh’s inclusion over another player.

The Argument for Rinku Singh

Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistani cricketer, has joined the chorus of voices questioning the exclusion of Rinku Singh from India’s T20 World Cup squad. Singh’s remarkable debut in the blue jersey and his consistent performance in T20Is, where he amassed 356 runs with an outstanding average of 89, have made a strong case for his inclusion. Kaneria believes that Singh’s proficiency and form warranted his selection in the primary squad rather than being relegated to the reserved list.

“India has a reputation of producing quality cricketers. In recent times Yashasvi Jaiswal and Angkrish Raghuvanshi are the prime examples of it. Mayank Yadav too has surprised everyone with his raw pace and so has Abhishek Sharma with his power-hitting capabilities. As far as Rinku’s case is concerned, I also feel that he should’ve been a part of India’s T20 WC squad.” Kaneria told Sports Now.

“If I take the ongoing IPL’s performances in consideration then Hardik Pandya should’ve been the one to miss out. He hasn’t shown consistency at all. You already have Shivam Dube who has been doing well for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Overall the squad looks good, but Dube and Rinku would’ve been a powerful combination for India down the order,”

Criticism of Hardik Pandya’s Inclusion

Kaneria also raised doubts about the selection of Hardik Pandya in the T20 World Cup squad, particularly as vice-captain. Despite Pandya’s previous contributions to the Indian team, Kaneria questioned his recent form, particularly in the ongoing IPL season. Pandya’s lack of consistency and underwhelming performance, both as a batsman and a bowler, have led Kaneria to suggest that he should have been excluded from the squad.

Assessment of Team Composition

Reflecting on India’s reputation for producing quality cricketers, Kaneria highlighted the emergence of players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Mayank Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma. He argued that Singh’s omission was a missed opportunity for India to strengthen its batting lineup. Kaneria also suggested that Shivam Dube, who has been performing well for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, could have been a viable alternative to Pandya in the squad.

Concerns Surrounding Hardik Pandya’s Form

Kaneria pointed out the struggles faced by Hardik Pandya since his trade to Mumbai Indians. As captain, Pandya has been unable to steer the team to consistent victories, with Mumbai Indians losing seven out of eleven games under his leadership. Furthermore, Pandya’s batting form in the IPL has been subpar, failing to score a single half-century in eleven matches and accumulating only 198 runs at an average of 19.80. His bowling performance has also been disappointing, with a high economy rate of 11.

Selectors’ Decision Making

Despite Pandya’s recent struggles, selectors opted to include him in the T20 World Cup squad as an all-rounder. This decision may have been influenced by the lack of better alternatives in the fast-bowling all-rounder category. While acknowledging Pandya’s past contributions to the team, Kaneria questioned whether his current form warranted his selection over other promising players like Rinku Singh.

The exclusion of Rinku Singh from India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, coupled with the inclusion of Hardik Pandya despite his recent struggles, has stirred debate within the cricketing community. Kaneria’s remarks underscore the complexities involved in squad selection and raise valid questions about the criteria used by selectors in forming the team. As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on how the chosen players perform on the global stage.
