[Watch] Babar Azam’s Reaction to ‘ZimBabar’ Chants in PSL 2024 Match

Babar Azam, the former captain of Pakistan’s cricket team, got upset during a match in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024. It happened in Multan on February 23, during a game between Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi.

Babar was sitting on the sidelines with his team’s support staff when some fans started chanting ‘ZimBabar’, which made him angry. He even threatened to throw a water bottle at them in response to the insulting chants. However, he stopped himself before doing so.

Match Summary

In the match, Babar Azam scored 31 runs off 26 balls for Peshawar Zalmi, who managed to score 179/8 in their 20 overs. Multan Sultans, the home team, could only score 174 runs and lost the match by five runs. This win was Peshawar’s first in the tournament after three matches, while Multan faced their first loss after winning three consecutive games.

Despite the incident, Babar Azam has been performing exceptionally well in the tournament, scoring 171 runs at an average of 57 and a strike rate of 143.69.

Babar Azam will be seen in action again when Peshawar Zalmi takes on Lahore Qalandars, the two-time defending champions, on Sunday, February 25.

Reason for ‘ZimBabar’ Chants

Babar Azam has been criticized for scoring most of his runs against weaker teams. Fans started calling him ‘ZimBabar’, especially since he was considered a rival to Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. This nickname mainly refers to his outstanding performances against Zimbabwe, indicating that many of his runs come against lower-ranked teams.

Babar Azam has scored 693 runs against Zimbabwe in 18 matches, with an average of 57.75, including two centuries and five half-centuries. Although some see this as a misconception, considering his overall record, where he has scored over 13,000 runs across formats with an average of 48.45 and 31 centuries in 278 games.
