During a Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 match between Galle Gladiators and Dambulla Giants, an unusual incident occurred that caused a stoppage in play. The incident took place in the fourth over of the Giants’ innings when they had scored 27 runs and lost two wickets. The LPL was in its fourth edition, and this particular match happened on July 31st, Monday, at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The match began with Dambulla Giants winning the toss and choosing to field first. Galle Gladiators batted first and scored 180 runs for the loss of five wickets. When Dambulla Giants came to bat, their openers Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis couldn’t stay on the crease for long and were dismissed after scoring just one run each.
As the Giants’ innings progressed, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Perera at the crease, an unexpected interruption occurred. A snake was spotted on the ground near the boundary, which led to the game being halted for safety reasons.
Before the interruption, Dhananjaya de Silva had scored 43 runs off 31 deliveries, with five boundaries and one six, while the Gladiators’ highest run-scorer was Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who made 48 runs off 34 balls, including five fours and two sixes.
The video of the incident later surfaced, capturing the unique and unusual moment in the LPL match. It must have been an unexpected and memorable sight for players and spectators alike.
