Watch Sunil Narine Creates History: First-Ever Red Card Issued in CPL 2023 as New Over-Rate Rules Come Into Play

Sunil Narine, a player for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023, made history by receiving the first-ever red card in CPL. This happened during a match against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The incident occurred just before the 20th over of the game. When a player gets a red card in CPL, they have to leave the field, and their team plays with one less player during that period. This also affects field placements, as only two players are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

The red card rule was introduced to address issues with slow over-rates and time-wasting in CPL matches. Here’s how the new rule works:

  1. If a team falls behind the required over rate by the 18th over, an extra player must be placed within the fielding circle, which contains five players.
  2. If the team is still behind the required rate by the 19th over, two fielders need to be inside the fielding circle, totaling six players inside.
  3. If the team is behind the rate by the start of the 20th over, they will lose a player from the field as chosen by the captain. The fielding circle will have six players inside, which gives the batting team more opportunities to play shots.
  4. If the batting team wastes time, they will receive a warning from the umpires before being penalized with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.

In the match where Narine received the red card, Trinbago Knight Riders were already lagging behind in terms of over rate by the 20th over. As a result, Narine had to leave the field for the final over of the innings. Despite this setback, Trinbago Knight Riders managed to win the match by six wickets, with Sunil Narine contributing as a bowler, taking 3 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs.
