Watch: Joe Root Surprises Shreyas Iyer with Unexpected Short Ball in 2nd IND vs ENG Test

In the ongoing second Test between India and England, all-rounder Joe Root, known for his off-spin, introduced an unexpected twist by delivering a short-pitched ball to middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. Despite Iyer’s assurance regarding handling short deliveries, the tactic seems to persist, now even from spinners like Root.

Root’s Surprise Delivery

During the 38th over on Day 1 in Vishakapatnam, Root, not typically associated with short-pitched deliveries, bowled a sharp bouncer to Iyer. Although not caught off guard, Iyer skillfully pulled the ball for a boundary towards square leg.

Testing Iyer’s Skills

Earlier in his innings, Iyer faced a brief challenge from James Anderson’s short-pitched deliveries, showcasing composure as the veteran seamer reverted to his usual line outside the off-stump.

Root’s Performance in the Match

Unlike his impactful five-wicket haul in the series opener in Hyderabad, Root has struggled in the current match. After bowling 12 overs, he remains wicketless and is the most expensive bowler, conceding 53 runs.

Iyer’s Unfortunate Dismissal

Despite handling the short-pitched deliveries well, Iyer’s innings concluded in an unfortunate manner. A delivery from Tom Hartley kept low, resulting in an under-edge as Iyer attempted a cut shot. Wicketkeeper Foakes made a sharp catch behind the stumps, dismissing Iyer for 27 runs off 59 deliveries.
